When you look at this landscape, you might feel amazed, scared, or excited. But this place actually exists, and very few people know about it.
In reality, who knows when you and I will get a chance to visit the Moon? But yes, you can visit this moon-like landscape anytime.
This place is a small village in Ladakh called Lamayuru, located almost 100 kilometers from Leh Airport.
At the top of the village stands the Lamayuru Monastery, and the village consists of a few hundred houses scattered around it.

The houses built on this incredibly strange-looking landscape are even more unusual, as some of them are built into caves.
Initially, the entire region of Ladakh that you see today was submerged underwater. The whole area was covered by a lake, and only a few structures around the monastery stood above the water, while the rest remained submerged.
The Moonland that you see ahead is also evidence that a lake existed here a long time ago. The mud and sediments from the lake accumulated in one place. When the water level dropped and the lake eventually drained, the sediments were left behind. As the water gradually dried up, these sediments formed the unusual structures that we see today.
Think of it this way: imagine a small pond that slowly drains away. Once all the water disappears, the mud remains behind. Something similar happened here, leaving behind these distinctive formations. This is why the area is now known as Moonland.

Moonland is an excellent example of nature’s wonders. The landscape preserves these unusual sediment formations, and the story of the lake drying up is also associated with a spiritual belief.
It is believed that Guru Naropa laid the foundation stone of Lamayuru Monastery. According to local legend, the lake dried up because of his prayers, making it possible for the village and monastery to be established here.
That is also why the Naropa Meditation Centre is located at one of the highest points in the area. Just opposite the monastery, you will find numerous small meditation spaces and homes that serve as meditation centers. Many lamas and spiritual masters are believed to have meditated here, performed rituals, and pursued spiritual enlightenment or nirvana.

All these stories make you feel that Lamayuru is indeed a blessed and special place.
The landscape of Lamayuru is truly extraordinary. It is the kind of place that I—and perhaps many others—may be seeing for the very first time. When you look at it, you feel as though an entirely different world has opened up before you.
And the place is not called Moonland solely because of its unusual mud formations. There are a few other reasons behind the name.
Why is it called Moonland? I have heard several explanations.
One reason is that the soil here resembles the kind of surface material found on the Moon. That is why the area is called Moonland.
Another explanation is that during a full moon, the landscape reflects the moonlight more prominently, making the formations appear even more striking.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t lucky enough to visit this place during a full moon. But on a full-moon night, these muddy formations are said to reflect the moonlight in such a way that you feel as though you are standing on the surface of the moon.
So, if you ever feel like looking at the Moon and getting a little closer to it, remember that it may not be as far away as you think!
