The newly inaugurated Maa Baglamukhi Ropeway near Pandoh Dam in Mandi has quickly become a major attraction for both tourists and devotees. Officially launched by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on December 3,2024 , this state-of-the-art ropeway offers an exhilarating journey over the tranquil waters of the Pandoh Reservoir. It transforms what was once a long road trip into a breathtaking aerial adventure, making travel to the Mata Baglamukhi Temple not just convenient but also unforgettable.
It was my wife who told me about the destination because they had their school( Indus Global School) picnic in the nature park close to this ropeway. She was quite intrigued by the sheer beauty of the place and how this place has transformed in to a picnic spot for all the schools nearby.
A Game-Changer for Pilgrims and Tourists
Previously, reaching the revered Mata Baglamukhi Temple required a 14-kilometer road journey, which could take up to 50 minutes. Now, the 800-meter-long ropeway has reduced the travel time to just 4 minutes, offering a seamless and scenic alternative. Built at a cost of ₹53.89 crore, the ropeway connects the temple to the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway near the Pandoh scissor turn, significantly improving accessibility.
For elderly devotees, this development is life-changing. Tourists, too, are thrilled by the experience.
Affordable and Efficient Travel
The ropeway, managed by the Ropeway & Rapid Transport System Development Corporation Limited(RTDC) , operates daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. It can accommodate over 250 passengers per day, with a total capacity of 600 people per hour. Ticket pricing is also designed to be affordable:
- Tourists: ₹150 for a one-way trip, ₹250 for a round trip.
- Children under 10: 50% discount.
- Children under 5: Free travel.
- Local residents: Subsidized fare of ₹30 for a one-way trip.
Equipped with European CEN-standard technology, the ropeway operates at a line speed of 21.6 km/h, ensuring a smooth and safe ride. Notably, it is the first ropeway in India funded under NABARD’s RIDF scheme and was completed in a record 32 months despite challenges such as last year’s natural disasters, which caused an increase in construction costs from an initial estimate of ₹45 crore.
A Unique Experience Over Water
The Maa Baglamukhi Ropeway is the only one in Himachal Pradesh that passes over a water body, adding an extraordinary thrill to the journey. Passengers glide over the serene Pandoh Reservoir, taking in majestic views of the surrounding hills and pristine landscapes. The breathtaking scenery has made the ride itself a major highlight, with many visitors describing it as a luxurious experience.
Speaking at the inauguration, CM Sukhu emphasized the ropeway’s significance, stating, “The breathtaking journey in gondolas suspended above the serene waters provides passengers with majestic views of the surrounding hills and the tranquil reservoir below. This unique feature adds to the excitement of the ride, making it a standout attraction.”
Boosting Tourism and Local Economy
Beyond providing a convenient transport alternative, the ropeway is expected to boost tourism in the region significantly. Local attractions, such as the Nature Park Bakhli, have also been enhanced to offer visitors a more immersive experience. The Forest Department has undertaken developments in the surrounding areas, making the destination even more appealing.
Additionally, the ropeway strengthens Mandi’s position as a gateway to major tourist hotspots like Kullu, Manali, Kasol, and Lahaul-Spiti. It is expected to generate substantial economic opportunities for the local population by promoting sustainable tourism and reducing travel time.
Lot many new road side vendor selling Sidus, momos & Chinese food are lined up close to the entry gate of the ropeway. We enjoyed the sidus with ghee with one such female vendor who was energetic serving the freshly steamed Sidus.
